Why Are Children Not In Sports?

On September 20th, 2018, during American Sport in the 21st Century, we talked about how adults are an issue in youth sports today, along with coaches and parents. These adults are major problems because of the overemphasis they put on winning, the pressure from significant others to achieve success, the instillation of unrealistic goals towards stardom, and the overuse, overtraining, and burnout of young athletes. The overemphasis on winning and achievement has impacted the sportsmanship part of the game. It is apparent that many referees, parents, and coaches cause the majority of problems with sportsmanship, and in class we discovered that the main reason a kid would want to drop out of sports is because of negative coaches and parents. This intensity that surrounds winning has led to major problems in the youth sports world, because it not only reflects lousy sportsmanship, but it also drops participation numbers and increases injuries. As we can see, bad experiences with coaches and parents during a youth sporting event does impact the motivation to continue participating in the sport. Looking back at the report card for youth sports in the United States that was shown in class, it is clear why parental behavior/involvement is graded as a D.
