How Adidas Demonstrated Deviance in Collegiate Basketball

On November 1, 2018, in our American Sport in the 21st Century class, we discussed deviance in sports. One recent event that has occurred is the illegal recruiting that was done by Kansas University’s basketball staff and Adidas. These institutions were paying high school players and college players to attend Kansas University (an Adidas sponsored institution). It was found that Adidas did make payments to current players and former players as well as their guardians. An example of one of these families would be Deandre Ayton’s, whose mother was planning on receiving housing and a job on top of illicit payments to help persuade her son to play at KU. Through many wired phone calls and banking records, it was found that a former Adidas rep did make payments to players and family members in order to get top recruits to attend KU. The corruption within college basketball has started to unfold, revealing the evil doings of some top name brands and coaching staffs when they are making efforts to recruit top athletes to their school. The final verdict from the federal court is still in the process of completion, as well as the NCAA investigation of these illegal actions.
